Dailies: MOVIES: Marie and Dan (Dan in Real Life)

Scene: seconds after Dan (Steve Carell) is accused of being a "murderer...of love!" by his daughter, for sending her lovesick boyfriend away.
Dan: Love isn't a feeling: it's an ability.
Marie (Juliette Binoche), observing the spectacle in  awe: Well, if that's true, then you have one gifted daughter.

Dailies: MOVIES: Ma. Elena (Vicky Cristina Barcelona)

Also while I was home, I finally watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona (after lugging the Netflix disc around with me for almost a month, like a nagging reminder or an albatross–I'm sure Woody Allen would be okay with either). I liked it. I was surprised.  Apparently Penelope Cruz was not told that the movie was a comedy so as to not interfere with her acting, and it worked!  As Maria Elena, she's super crazy in a dramatic Spanish way that wouldn't be possible if she were trying to channel that Allenesque humor. I identified the most with her– the insanely jealous/homicidal/suicidal painter– than with the two milquetoast American leads, and I'm looking at this as a positive thing.
