Recent Dreams

I have recurring dreams about Chicago, the El 'L' trains in particular. The tracks are like roller coaster tracks and the routes are not accurate ( I used to jump on trains in the Loop without checking to see if they were the the right line, fall asleep in transit, and then wake up as the train was pulling into a station with a strange, unfamiliar name, though I never made it to the end of the line in any of these instances). I had a dream about the green line this weekend, one of the routes I never actually took when I lived in Chicago.  Robert and I were trying to get somewhere on the green line and realized we were on the other side of the platform (the wrong side). As in dreams, the correction was almost instantaneous.

Recent Dreams

Ronnie had a disturbing dream about two teenaged sisters, one of whom was possessed, or else physically or mentally ill. One of the sisters was played by? Meryl Streep. It's hard to tell when you're omniscient and omnipresent in dreams if you are watching tv or if it is really happening (in the dream).

Swedish Auto

The cinematography in this indie film is quite beautiful: lovely lines, interesting angles, novel transitions.

Moleskine: The Basset in the Window

Yesterday on the way back from On The Hill, Megan and I encountered two dogs, behind the windows of a John Street rowhouse: one, an elderly German shepherd (not pictured, in the window facing left) and the basset hound in the window facing right. He looked like a stately and disgruntled gentleman, who did not approve of us in our flowered dresses one bit.

Moleskine: Random portraits

Robert, from the NYC trip in January.

This was the day last week that I saw the pileated woodpecker.

Movies, this weekend

Robert and I took the Criterion Collection 1990s indie route to the cinema (and three of my favourite films), since there's nothing out at the moment that moved us to go to the movies.

Moleskine: The Great Beyond

Thinking about text and image and the artist John Baldessari, and lyrics to R.E.M. songs from the 90s that I don't know since they occurred after Bill Berry...until Robert plays them for me.

Gr 2 (working title, in progress): Third state

I like that they're sort of floating in space. I was originally going to draw the chairs, but now I don't think I will...

Who Will Run the Frog Hospital?

Who Will Run the Frog Hospital. 2009 (in progress). Graphite on paper.

I've been working on this for a few years; it takes its title from the Lorrie Moore novel, inspired by a painting done by one of the two main characters, Sils, as described by her best friend Berie:

This could yield a series drawing from literature and fairy tales and my own life, especially childhood. In this piece Sils and Berie are played by me and my friend Donna, though the girls in the drawing are younger than the girls in the book, and Donna and I didn't know each other as young children.

Gr 2 (working title, in progress): Second state

I've always gravitated toward photographs of people in groups. Class pictures (here, my boyfriend Robert's second grade class photo)  are especially fascinating.
